What is Temporomandibular Joint Disorder?
TMJ Disorder is a functional disorder (breakdown) in the oral system resulting in pain, headaches, and/or destruction of teeth. TMJ Disorder is usually caused by clenching and/or grinding of teeth. The symptoms of TMJ Disorder are often painful and disruptive to everyday life.
What is the Oral System?
The oral system refers to all parts of the jaw and face that must work together to function, i.e. to chew, speak, open and close the mouth, etc. The oral system is made up of teeth, bone, gums, muscles, and the Temporomandibular joint.

Custom-Made Splint (MAGO)
Successful Long-Term Treatment:
Splint Therapy is completed over a period of months and is similar to "physical therapy" for the jaws. Splint therapy requires the patient wear a custom-made splint, also known as a MAGO, to relax muscles and correct jaw position. Dr. Vondrak personally designs and makes all splints in her office with the goal of stabilizing the oral system and eliminating pain. By wearing a custom made splint, the patient will experience relief because the muscles of the head, neck and shoulders will relax and inflammation in the joint will decrease.
